6 Totally Metallic Ways Metallica Raised Their Voice For A Better World
From the last innings of New York Yankees games to the soundtracks of beloved television series, legendary metal band Metallica have been a cultural mainstay in the United States and around the world since the 1980s. released album after album to critical acclaim, sold tens of millions of tickets, and performed in at least 48 countries.

The band members – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – will once again raise their voices for a better world on September 24 as they headline the Global Citizen Festival: NYC in Central Park, where we call on world leaders , businesses and philanthropists to do more than they have ever done before to end extreme poverty NOW.
Metallica will perform alongside Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, MÅNESKIN, Mariah Carey, Mickey Guyton and Rosalía. The festival will be hosted by actor, producer, author and Global Citizen Ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

1. Metallica initially kept their charity work a secret for years.
Originally, Metallica chose not to publicize their charity work to avoid it appearing to be “patting each other on the back”, quietly donating food and money in cities where he played, drummer Ulrich explained in a 2018 op-ed for Rolling Stone.
But the group has since pivoted to championing causes in the open to rally more support, allowing them to raise even more awareness for the causes they care so much about and mobilizing their fans to take action.
2. The group created its own foundation to focus on a series of important issues.
In 2017, Metallica founded the All Within My Hands Foundation to consolidate their major philanthropic initiatives. The foundation focuses on higher education, workforce development, women’s rights, hunger, emergency relief, and community service.
One of the foundation’s efforts was to donate $277,000 to build the first pediatric cancer hospital in Romania in 2019. More recently, the foundation donated $135,000 to support victims of serious floods in Germany earlier this year.
Since 2018, the All Within My Hands Foundation has held an annual day of service, encouraging fans to join Metallica in giving back to communities by volunteering at local food banks.
3. Metallica joined Global Citizen in the fight against extreme poverty in 2016.
The beloved metal band performed on stage at the Global Citizen Festival in 2016. They brought their fans crazy to take action and support our mission to end extreme poverty, fight climate change and to empower historically excluded communities.
Their performance was dedicated to “those like-minded people whose good intentions hopefully meet their intended destiny,” vocalist and guitarist Hetfield shouted.
Metallica also joined our 24 hour global event Citizen of the World Live in September 2021, performing from Louisville, Kentucky, in support of our campaign to defend the planet and end poverty.
4. The group actively supports environmental causes.
Metallica has supported sustainability causes for decades, most notably when the band performed as part of the Live Earth concert in 2007, which benefited various environmental organizations.
They have also donated to environmental groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, the Sierra Club and Rainforest Action Network.
In 2020, Metallica donated $775,000 to wildlife relief in Australia following the deadly wildfires.
5. Metallica has made several donations to groups helping communities overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 has had a particularly negative impact on the live music industry, with countless clubs, recording studios and concert halls shivering due to the loss of foot traffic.

6. The group donated $500,000 to help feed Ukrainian refugees.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine created the fastest growing refugee crisis in modern history, with nearly 15 million people displaced by the conflict, including 6.7 million refugees who fled the country. Most of these refugees are still in the process of obtaining stable housing and other necessities of life.
Metallica’s $500,000 donation to World Central Kitchen in April 2022 will go a long way to ensuring displaced families have meals to eat.
“The work Chef José Andrés and the dedicated cooks at World Central Kitchen are doing on the front lines in a humanitarian crisis is nothing short of amazing,” Ulrich said in a statement.
