Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a condolence letter to Michiko Kanzaki on February 18 for the loss of her husband Koji Kanzaki, a prominent Japanese philanthropist living in Cambodia, who has contributed greatly to promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the Kingdom.

“My wife and I are very saddened and shocked to learn of the loss of your beloved husband, Mr. Koji Kanzaki. We would like to express our deepest condolences to you and your family for this immense loss. May his soul rest in peace.” said Hun Sen in his letter.

“Koji Kanzaki was a true friend of Cambodia. He dedicated 38 years of his life to promoting Japan-Cambodia ties and building schools, hospitals and physical infrastructure in Cambodia.

“Even in his last days, he remained devoted to the noble cause. During the courtesy visit on February 1, 2022, he offered me to donate land to build a PKO [peacekeeping operations] park and offered its expertise on flood prevention in Cambodia,” he added.

The letter did not mention Kanzaki’s death.

In 2017, the Japanese Embassy said Kanzaki had been active in Japanese and Cambodian society for many years and had contributed significantly to the development and reconstruction of infrastructure in the Kingdom.

He had also worked to improve education, culture and the environment in Cambodia, through actions such as planting trees, granting scholarships to children whose families cannot afford the fees schooling and the construction of schools.

Kanzaki was one of the recipients of the 2017 Spring Decorations, which are awarded to deserving individuals in recognition of their national or public service and in honor of their distinguished achievements in various fields of society, said the embassy.

According to the TV3 Asia report in 2014, Kanzaki was formerly the CEO of Camcal Co Ltd, which is no longer listed on the Commerce Ministry’s business registry. As of February 19, however, the register listed a “Koji Kanzaki” as chairman of Camjap Green Corp, although it was not immediately clear if this was the same person.
