A place of precious family memories, the wooded area and the land that surrounds it are full of well-used trails. The town hall intends to maintain it
WATERLOO — The thriving woodland that 10 Bauer kids hiked and skied growing up will now belong to everyone.
The Bauer family donated four hectares, or 11 acres, worth $270,000 to the City of Waterloo through the estate of their parents, Ray and Patsy Bauer.
“It was important to my parents to share this beautiful property with all the residents, and also to make sure it remained a park forever,” said Brian Bauer.
The woodlot is nestled in the largest wooded area of the city, in the northwest corner, near the suburb of Vista Hills. It is mostly hardwood forest, has no direct road access, and is surrounded by natural land also owned by the town hall.
Patsy and Ray Bauer married in 1949. She died last February at age 94, predeceased by Ray. Ray was the brother of Father David Bauer, a Catholic priest and former hockey player, and Bobby Bauer, who played for the Boston Bruins on the NHL’s famous Kraut line in the 1930s.
The couple were proud promoters of this region, known for its good works and charity. Patsy trained as a nurse. Ray worked in the family business, Bauer Industries, where he chaired the board of directors for nearly three decades.
Their woodlot is part of a larger protected area in which nothing can be built under by-law. Legal uses are limited to beekeeping, parks and trails.
The area is designated as an environmentally sensitive landscape. It is rich in plants and animals. It recharges groundwater drawn from the municipal aqueduct network.
Today, the wooded area and the land surrounding it are filled with well-used trails. The town hall intends to maintain it.
Growing up, the Bauer children visited just about every weekend, long before houses were built nearby. “We were going for walks and cross-country skiing,” Brian said. “It was a way to introduce us to nature and get some fresh air.”
The children were swimming and skating in a nearby pond. They were running and shouting, having picnics and playing games.
On Thursday, a handful of Bauer kids hiked a familiar trail leading into the woods. They marveled at what has changed and what has not changed. “It’s a rush of memories,” said EJ Bauer.
Some trees are much taller than they remember. The place where they used to picnic is overgrown.
The nearby pond is still there under the snow. You can still see where the diving board was. It was the best place for hockey and other thrills, like when their mother broke her leg.
She tripped on her skates and fell. It happened just as a shot rang out, which made everyone think, “Mom got shot!” But no, the gunshot they all heard was far away and unrelated. Patsy recovered and her injury became a family tradition.
Many residents have passed through the Boisé Bauer. It was never marked as private property.
The land donation, for which the Bauer Estate will receive a charitable receipt, “isn’t something you see very often,” Mayor Dave Jaworsky said. “It’s certainly very exciting.”
The Bauer family “has shown leadership for the many residents who own private property in this area as to how that land should be treated,” the councilor said. said Royce Bodaly.
