Enrych, charity for people with reading disabilities, wins £1,000 Covid-19 grant

Enych Berkshire are this year’s first recipients of a £1,000 grant from the John Syke Foundation’s Covid-19 Relief Fund.

The John Sykes Foundation was established in 2014 to improve the lives of disadvantaged individuals and groups in the city.

Enrych, based in Reading since 2008, helps adults with disabilities in Reading access leisure and learning facilities of their choice with a like-minded volunteer.

The check was presented by Founder and Chairman of Trustees, John Sykes, Enrych President and Treasurer, Martin Jeffery, and Volunteer Project Coordinator, Marie Garland.

Mr Jeffery said: Our volunteers support and enable people with physical disabilities to take up or resume a hobby, interest, sporting activity or learning opportunity that they cannot do without help or support.

“This support is primarily about providing trust, understanding and emotional support to bring color to the lives of our members.

“While there are recreation centres, special interest centers, sports clubs and colleges in the area, people with disabilities can still feel isolated.

“They need impetus and practical help to pursue an interest or activity.

“The fun factor enhances morale, dignity and independence and goes a long way to encouraging physical and mental well-being.

“It helps relieve depression, increases self-esteem, confidence and gives the member a sense of empowerment.

“Funding has been severely reduced over the past 18 months due to Covid-19.

“We have made numerous requests to trusts and foundations over the past year, but have been unsuccessful.”

Mr Sykes commented: “The Foundation is delighted to support Enrych Berkshire, and we enjoyed meeting the team so much at their offices.

“We have loved hearing such heartwarming stories of service users being able to pursue their passion or interest with a volunteer who matches their needs and more often than not forms a lasting relationship.”
