RICHMOND, Virginia—Day one of competition at the River City Open tennis saw good play in several singles steals and Villanova was 13-5 overall in competition at the Williams-Bolettieri Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. . Nine players compete for the Wildcats this weekend and five were double winners in their singles matches on Friday, including the seniors. Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas), junior Alex kim (Cary, North Carolina) and the second trio of Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, New Jersey), Ryan nguyen (Oakton, Virginia) and Noah winton (Colombia, Missouri).

The goal of the River City Tennis Open is to provide a first-class varsity tennis event in Richmond while providing charitable donations to youth in the Greater Richmond area. This year’s tournament features 22 singles steals and 11 doubles draws with players from multiple East Coast schools. Most singles steals have four players and consist of round robin competition to begin with, with the majority of players entering their first two singles matches on Friday mornings and afternoons.

Jones participates in Flight 16 and took straight set victories over his opponents George Mason and Navy by identical scores of 6-2, 6-3. He started the day with a victory over Ryan Charles of the Patriots and went on to claim a victory over Cy McLeod of the Midshipmen.

There were exciting wins for Khromchenko in Flight 14 and Kim in Flight 19 in Friday’s competition. Khromchenko outlived James Madison’s Mathieu Josserand in a tie-breaker in his morning game to score a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 victory before beating Georgetown’s Carlos Grande later in the day in two sets (6-4, 6-3). Kim opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over George Mason’s Erick Rivas before going to a tiebreaker for a 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 win over Ernesto Rocabert of Longwood.

Nguyen stars in Flight 18 and he also started the day with a thriller against VCU’s Gray Voelzke in a 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 decision. He then beat Karl Katlaps of Radford (6-2, 6-2) in his second win of the day. Winton is in Flight 21 and his Friday matches included wins over George Mason’s Dustin Ha by a count of 6-2, 7-6 (3) and George Mason’s Chanasorn Nakaurai by scores of 6-1 and 6- 1.

Three other Villanova players have shared their first two games of the tournament. In vol 6, year two Josh robinson (Potomac, Maryland) overcame a morning loss to Navy’s Finn Garner (7-5, 7-5) to claim a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Georgetown’s Charlie Suh on Friday afternoon. First-year student Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, California) is in flight 11 and earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Rithik Sardana of George Mason after falling earlier to Joseph Brailovsky of William & Mary (6-3, 7-5). In Vol 17, Year Two Antoine Prokurat (Manalapan, New Jersey) was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over George Mason’s Herman Jentoft after falling to College of Charleston’s Zac Larke (6-1, 6-4).

In doubles on Friday, Suarez and Prokurat’s side fell to Radford’s Aditya Balsekar and Robert Hagen in a 6-2 result in Pink Draw. Their next match is against William & Mary’s Daniel Pellerito and Finbar Talcott. Nguyen and Kim opened the game in the draw with a 6-3 loss to William Crane and Raphael Mujan of Radford before defeating Jack Kelly and Sebastian Quiros of William & Mary by default.

Fourticq and Khromchenko are underway in the yellow draw where they were beaten 6-2 by Youssef Sadek and Josserand of James Madison. The Wildcats’ double-finals team Jones and Robinson had yet to play their first game in the orange draw.
