Opening a café to employ people with special needs

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – The opening of a new non-profit business in Greenville will provide people with special needs an employment opportunity.

Awaken Coffee is a non-profit organization that seeks to employ people with special needs to serve their unique blend of coffee and more.

“They can come and have a good coffee, a pastry or a sandwich and simply meet up with friends, get to know the employees because our employees will surely want to meet them.

The two founders of Awaken Coffee say there are very few opportunities for the special needs community after graduation, so they wanted to create a place in Pitt County that broadens that reach.

“I know that as a mother of a child with autism, they also need support. And we want to offer that and one of my missions alongside employing people with special needs, as a mom, I want to offer resources to other parents.

However, renovations won’t start until they have all the money they need for the project.

The founders of Awaken Coffee say they have about half the money for the renovation, but need about $ 148,000 more and then $ 150,000 more for the start-up costs of base, payroll, supplies and inventory.

They even have an anonymous donor who has pledged to match all donations up to $ 25,000 received through December 9th.

At the heart of ENC’s non-profit business center, there are 12 non-profit organizations located in the building, and the owner has offered a free five-year lease for Awaken Coffee.

Awaken Coffee has had a few pop-up events since the idea was born, and will be at the Tar River Potters Show on October 16 and the Holiday Show.
