Many aid groups in Afghanistan are on standby, wondering whether to leave or stay and see how reformed the current version of the Taliban is. For now, Médecins Sans Frontières plans to continue operating clinics and hospitals in the country. A leader of the organization said he might fare better than other groups because he does not take political sides, although he admitted: “We cannot take anything for granted. A CARE executive said his team in Afghanistan was “cautiously optimistic” about continuing work there and may even escalate, although operations are on hold for now. The work of Sahar Education, a US nonprofit that has built a girls’ boarding school in Afghanistan, is also on hold. “We don’t think the environment is favorable for NGOs,” said the group’s executive director.
