Nonprofits face volunteer shortage as Nevadans return to work
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – As companies increase wages to encourage work, local nonprofits are struggling to get volunteers to work for free. Several charities across the valley are calling on the community for help.
“I’ve been in this business for a long time,” said Jeffrey Weiss, chef and owner of Valencia gold. “I don’t think there is anything in my career that has more impact on my career than what I did last year.”
Since Chef Weiss closed his restaurant due to the pandemic, he has cooked 60,000 meals to help those in need.
“It’s good to build good restaurants, but when the community needs your help, it’s up to us, always as chefs and restaurateurs, to say first, ‘What can we do?
Chef Weiss has partnered with Delivering with Dignity, a nonprofit that provides high-quality meals to southern Nevada’s most vulnerable families and seniors.
“Even with the city reopening and the people getting vaccinated, a lot of the people we serve do not have the privilege of getting vaccinated because of their immune system or being in other situations,” said Ashlen Ramit, Volunteer Coordinator.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonprofits are on track to return to pre-pandemic employment levels, but positions up to their volunteers are not filling as quickly.
The coordinators of the CASA program feel the same impact. the court-appointed special advocate program (CASA) asks anyone who loves children to volunteer. CASAs are volunteers who have the best interests of a child who has been abused or neglected and who is now in the foster care system.
“They have someone who can be on their side; who can represent them and represent what they want, and make their voices heard, ”said Rebecca Burton
President of the Family Chamber. “Children don’t feel like their voices are heard or that everyone cares about what they have to say.
Although nonprofits are looking for volunteers, some offer their own incentives. Delivering with Dignity means giving volunteers gas cards, Amazon cards and Visa cards.
